App won't install or run: how to fix it
Work through safe fixes in order when a program will not install, will not open, or stops straight away on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- Windows 11
- Windows 10
A program will not install, will not open, or closes straight after you start it on Windows. The fixes run from the quickest and safest to the more involved, so you can stop as soon as one works.
Windows 10 no longer receives security updates
Support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. These fixes still apply, but avoid banking and other sensitive tasks on an unsupported system, and plan to move on. See what to do about Windows 10 end of support.
Before you start
- Write down the exact message on screen, or take a photo. The wording is the most useful clue, and you will want it if you ask the maker for help.
- Note whether the problem is at install time or at run time. They have different fixes.
- Allow about 15 minutes. Nothing here deletes your files, but if a document matters, back it up first.

Try these fixes in order
1. Restart the PC
- Close all programs. Select Start, then Power, then Restart.
- When Windows is back, try the install or the program again. This clears a half-finished installer or a stuck background process. It takes about two minutes.
2. Check the basics
Most failures that happen right away have a simple cause.
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| Damaged download | Delete the file and download it again from the maker's official website. Do not use a third-party download site. |
| Not enough space | Open File Explorer, select This PC, and look at the free space on drive C. See how to free up disk space. |
| Wrong version of the program | On the maker's download page, make sure it supports your version of Windows. Some programs also have separate downloads for Arm-based PCs, so check the page for your PC type. |
| Program is too old | Look for a newer version. Microsoft advises checking the publisher's website, or the Microsoft Store for Store apps, for an update first. |
| Blocked by a warning | If a blue box said "Windows protected your PC", see what the SmartScreen warning means. |
3. Run the installer as administrator
Some installers need permission to change system folders.
- Open your Downloads folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- If Windows asks for permission (User Account Control), check that the program name is the one you expect, then select Yes.
On a work or school PC, you may need an administrator's password. If you do not have one, ask whoever manages the PC.
4. Install updates
- Open and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open .
- Install anything offered and restart. If updates themselves fail, see Windows Update stuck or failing.
- For a Microsoft Store app, open the Store. On Windows 11, select Library, then Get updates. On Windows 10, select See more, then Downloads and updates, then Get updates.
5. Repair or reset the app
This works for apps that are already installed but will not run correctly. Microsoft notes that not all desktop apps support it.
- Open .
- Find the app, select the three-dot More button, then select Advanced options. If that link is missing, the app has no repair option, so go on to the next fix.
- Select Repair. Try the app again.
- If it still fails, select Reset. This can delete the app's own settings and saved data, so use it after Repair.
6. Use the compatibility troubleshooter
This helps older programs that were made for earlier versions of Windows.
- On Windows 11, open . On Windows 10, open .
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run. On Windows 10 it is under Find and fix other problems, and the button is Run the troubleshooter.
- Choose the program that is giving trouble and follow the prompts.
Troubleshooters are changing
Menu names can differ between Windows builds. If you do not find the item above, type compatibility in the Settings search box. Do not use this tool on antivirus or disk utility programs. Get a current version from the maker instead.
7. Fix a stuck install or removal (Windows 10)
On Windows 10, Microsoft offers the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, which can repair damaged registry keys that block installs, updates and removals. Get it only from Microsoft's page Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed. On Windows 11, Microsoft may offer a troubleshooter when an install fails, so follow any prompt.
8. Remove the app and install it again
- Uninstall the app. See how to uninstall programs.
- Restart the PC.
- Download the latest installer from the maker's official website, or install it from the Microsoft Store.
- Run the installer once and watch for any message.
When a program installs but will not open
If a program shows an error as it starts, or closes at once, the fixes above still apply, especially steps 4 to 6. Two more points:
- Write down the exact error. The program maker's support page often explains each message.
- If the problem began right after a Windows update, the maker may already know and have a fix. Look at the maker's support page before you change anything else.
Keep your security software running
Windows Security or another antivirus may block a program for a reason. If you think a safe program is blocked, ask the maker. If you do not recognize the program, run a malware scan.

If it still does not work
- Use the support page on the program maker's website. Never call a number shown in a pop-up or a search ad. See how to spot tech support scams.
- Check whether the program supports your PC. A very old program may not run on current Windows at all, and a newer or alternative program may be the answer.
- As a last resort, Reset this PC with the keep-my-files choice reinstalls Windows and removes your apps and settings. It takes time. Back up first, and only consider it if many programs fail.
Frequently asked questions
Why does an installer work for a friend but not for me?
PCs differ in free space, Windows version, security settings, and whether you are an administrator. Check those first. Also make sure you downloaded the version that matches your PC.
Is it safe to use Run as administrator?
It is safe for a program you trust from its official source, because it only gives that one program more permission. Do not use it for a file that someone you do not know sent you.
Will Repair delete my data?
Repair is meant to keep your data. Reset can remove the app's settings and saved data, so use it second.
Should I use a registry cleaner or a third-party "fixer" tool?
No. Those tools often cause problems of their own and are a common route for unwanted software. Use the fixes above, Windows Update, and the maker's official support.
